Tibetan Astrology: Desires And Feelings

The 12 signs of the zodiac may be interpreted as stages of spiritual development, starting from

slavery  and ending in freedom. Take for example Roeland de Looff who wrote on his web page a beautiful piece about Tibetan Astrology. Here are some points:

Aries is symbolized by a drawing of a blind man. Aries is hasty and that's why it stumbles.

Taurus is symbolized by a drawing of a potter. Taurus’s will shapes its future by its deeds.

Gemini is symbolized by a drawing of a restless monkey. Gemini is restless and is jumping between projects.

Cancer is symbolized by a drawing of a ship with two voyagers (consciousness & body) and a navigator (true self).

Leo is symbolized by a drawing of a house with windows representing the six senses: eyes, nose, ears, tongues, body and mind.

Virgo is symbolized by a drawing of two figures making love (representing contact).

Libra is symbolized by a drawing of a figure with an arrow in his eye (representing too much information).

Scorpio is symbolized by a drawing of a woman who is giving beverage to a man (representing desires and feelings).

Sagittarius is symbolized by a drawing of a woman that collects fruit in a basket (representing satisfaction through earthly objects).

Capricorn is symbolized by a drawing of two people making love in a cabin (representing new start)

Aquarius is symbolized by a drawing of a birth (representing new life).

Pisces is symbolized by a drawing of a burial. (Representing loss of material-life and release from the Wheel of Life.

Scorpio Key Holder

My son got this Scorpio Key Holder (made in Israel) for his birthday, almost a year ago.

Since zodiacal signs are personal and intimate there’s naturally always a demand for zodiacal artifacts – and where there is a demand there is a supplier.

Bel Temple at Palmyra, Syria

Scorpio and the other zodiacal signs appear on this massive relief carved from a single stone at the Bel Temple, Palmyra, Syria. The zodiac signs surround Bel and the other planet-gods Helios, Selene, Ares, Hermes, Aphrodite and Cronos. Picture is courtesy of “spdl_n1

Palmyra (aka Tadmor) is 215 km northeast of Damascus. Bel’s Greek name is Zeus and his Roman name is Jupiter. This temple is dated to the reign of Tiberius in 32 C.E.

In order to see the signs clearly I'm afraid you'll have to zoom in by clicking the All Sizes command above the picture

Artemis of Ephesus

Scorpio sign appears in the center of (Diana) Artemis’ chest along with the other signs of the zodiac around her neck on a 125-175 C.E. statue exhibited in Ephesus Museum, Turkey. Picture is courtesy of AWWS.

In Greek mythology Hellenic goddess Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo.

Dormition Church, Jerusalem, 1945

Zodiac Signs appear on the 1908 floor of the Roman Catholic Dormition (“Falling Asleep” of the Virgin) Church in Jerusalem along with names of Prophets Daniel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel and a verse from Proverbs 8, 23-25. The three intersecting circles in the center symbolize the Trinity. Designer of the church was Heinrich Renard.

Looks Like a Lizard

Scorpio that looks like a lizard. The picture is courtesy of “gorgeoux”. it is one of 12 zodiacal sign reliefs at Calella, Catalonia , Spain (50 kilometers north of Barcelona).

Colum Hourihane wrote in his book Time in the Medieval World that Scorpio was connected in medieval art to October, viewed from above, could have a long tail starting from the head, or could look like a dog, or a tortoise with shell (because the artists in Europe didn’t have a model of a real Scorpio in front of their eyes).

The full details of this book are: Occupations of the Months and Signs of the Zodiac in the Index of Christian Art, Princeton University Dept. of Art and Archaeology. Index of Christian Art, Penn State Press, 2007

Scorpio Rules The Desert

Tha late Rabbi S.Z. Kahana quoted on his web page from Lekach Tov to Genesis 1: 14

(And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years”)

Aries- Persia and Madai

Taurus- Chaldaeans

Gemini- Khazari

Cancer- Armenia

Leo -  Edom

Virgo: Ashkenazi, German

Scorpio- desert

Libra- Africa

Sagittarius- Negro

Capricorn- Eretz Israel

Aquarius - Egypt

Pisces- Hondea

It seems that the idea of zodiac signs ruling geographical areas was not originally Jewish since

1st century CE Roman poet and  astrologer Marcus Manilius already  wrote in his Astronomica that Scorpio ruled over Carthage, Libya, Egypt, Sardinia.

Scorpio of Pain Tattoo

Scorpio Tattoo (“Eylcia and the Scorpio of Pain”) picture is courtesy of Glandrid who shot it on the beach at a North Provincial Park party on a vacation at Lake Ontario. It is not entirely clear to me if the pain we are talking about here is the pain of Scorpios or the pain of Eylcia in the process of getting a tattoo... or both.

Babylonian Cuneiform Tablet

This Cuneiform tablet picture is courtesy of Nickmard Khoey who published it on Flickr with the following caption:

This is the last datable cuneiform tablet in the British Museum. It gives the monthly positions of the planets in the zodiac signs and the dates of their characteristic phenomena. Dates of solstices, equinoxes and eclipses are also given. The text also refers to the rising of Sirius, and especially bright star used as calendar markers by various cultures across the ancient world.

61 C.E., Babylon, Iraq

P.S.

Nickmard Khoey added:

It is the "last" dated Cunieform tablet. It has been dated because of the Zodiac information on it. Cunieform was still in use until the 1st Century AD. It was used for more than 3,000 years in various forms by different near eastern empires.

It’s a pity that I can’t read cuneiform letters. It would have been much more friendly if we could see the known zodiac-signs scattered between these strange letters, but it seems that these were invented latter.

Tetractys Zodiac And Six-Pointed Star

The Tetractys shows the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 as dots, each in a separate line.

The Tetractys is connected to the six-pointed Star, like we see here in the following drawing.

It is also connected to the zodiac as Clare Martin showed in her book "Mapping the Psyche", London, 2005:

Pythagoras devised the Tetractys as a mathematical model that shows how numbers describe the nature of the universe as well as the nature of any system, including the human being…

These numbers are not simply quantitative, but are also archetypes of number, with ‘oneness’, ‘twoness’, ‘threeness’ and ‘fourness’ being understood as wholes or unities in themselves, each with their own qualitative meaning.

1-     There is one zodiac

2-     The signs are active or passive (Scorpio is passive)

3-     The signs are cardinal, fixed or mutable (Scorpio is fixed)

4-     Each sign belongs to one of the elements: fire, earth, air, water (Scorpio is water)

Wishing Bridge, Jaffa, Israel

Nearby there's a big sign notifying that an ancient legend has it that if you touch your Zodiac sign and make a wish while looking at the sea - your wish will come true. To me it looks like a modern legend invented to attract tourists - why didn't they mention the source of the legend?

Mithraic Bas-relief from Modena

Scorpio with the other signs of the zodiac appears on a Bas-relief, which is kept  now in the Estense Museum in Modena, Italy.

From: The Mysteries Of Mithra by Franz Cumont, Chicago, 1903 p. 223

At Housesteads on Hadrian's Wall, Britain,  there was found a A bronze image of Mithras surrounded by the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac. This is the earliest artifact showing the Signs of the Zodiac in the north-west provinces of the Roman Empire.

Mithraism was brought to Rome by Roman soldiers from Persia in the first century C.E.

Hercules’ Twelve Labors Connected to the Zodiac

on a Greek stamp depicting Hercules killing the Nemean Lion

There are many references to the connection between Hercules' 12 Labors and the Zodiac. Alice A. Bailey even dedicated a whole book to this issue (The Labours of Hercules: An Astrological Interpretation, 2000).

Here’s a digest from: http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Mythology/HeraclesLabours.html

The Lernean Hydra - Cancer

The Nemean Lion -Leo

The Erymanthian Boar - Cancer

The Apples of the Hesperides- Scorpio

The Origin of the Zodiac

Donald A. Mackenzie claims in his book Myths of Babylonia And Assyria (1915, project Gutenberg, Chapter XIII- Astrology and Astronomy, Table XIII.1 that our signs are derived from ancient Babylonia:

Constellation Aries

Babylonian Equivalent: The Laborer or Messenger

Constellation Taurus

Babylonian Equivalent: A divine figure and the "bull of heaven"

Constellation Gemini

Babylonian Equivalent:

The Faithful Shepherd and Twins side by side, or head to head and feet to feet

Constellation Cancer

Babylonian Equivalent: Crab or Scorpion

Constellation Leo

Babylonian Equivalent: The big dog Lion

Constellation Virgo

Babylonian Equivalent: Ishtar, the Virgin's ear of corn

Constellation Libra

Babylonian Equivalent: The Balance

Constellation Scorpio
Babylonian Equivalent: Scorpion of darkness

Constellation Sagittarius

Babylonian Equivalent:

Man or man-horse with bow, or an arrow symbol

Constellation Capricorn

Babylonian Equivalent: Ea's goat-fish

Constellation Aquarius

Babylonian Equivalent: God with water urn

Constellation Pisces

Babylonian Equivalent: Fish tails in canal

In addition Donald A. Mackenzie wrote that according to the Babylonian Creation Legend (British Museum “The Seven Tablets Of Creation" from the Library of Ashur-bani-pal at Nineveh) Merodach fixed three stars for each month of the Zodiac… Mr. Brown, junior, calculated that the signs of the Zodiac were fixed in the year 2084 B.C.E (Primitive Constellations, 1899, vol. 2, pp. 147)

Stones, Colors, Tribes and the Zodiac

Marc Chagall created 12 painted windows at The Synagogue of the Hadassah Medical Center in 1962. The Windows represent the 12 Tribes of Israel, arranged in FOUR groups of three, and the choice of colors was inspired by the description of the breastplate of the High Priest in Exodus 28:17-21.

Picture is courtesy of “tevnin” From Flickr

In his book  (De Vita Mosis  3, 209) Philo (20-50 C.E.) interpreted the names on the 12 stones of the high priest as the signs of the zodiac.

Josephus Flavius (37-100 C.E.) gave a similar explanation to the 12 stones in his book  (Antiquities of the Jews Vo 3 chapter 7)

The stones were placed in FOUR rows like the zodiac signs which are arranged in FOUR groups according to the four elements: earth water fire and air.

The translation of the names of the stones from Hebre

w to English has many variations. Here’s one:

Ruby- Reuven

Topaz - Shimon

Emerald - Levi

Turquoise - Yehuda

Lapis Lazuli - Yissachar

Quartz - Zevulun

Jacinth - Dan

Agate - Naphtali

Amethyst- Gad

Chrysolite -Asher

Onyx - Yosef

Jasper - Binyamin

Now, since each stone had a different color the comparison between a certain stone and a certain tribe was also a comparison between a certain color

and a certain tribe.

The colors of the 12 tribes according to Sefer HaTodaah of Rabbi Eliyahu Kitov:

Red: Reuven

Green: Shimon

White/Black/red: Levi

Blue: Yehuda

Dark Gray: Yissachar

White: Zevulun

Sapphire Dan

Light Red: Naphtali

Light Gray: Gad

Not specified: Asher

Black: Yosef

All the colors: Binyamin

Picture of The Jewish High Priest with the 12 stones is courtesy of Hayim Shtayer from Haifa, Israel and this item is part of his collection

The following stones are associated with Scorpio: ruby, topaz, rhodonite, rhodocrosite, sodalite, bloodstone, beryl, apache tear, aqua aura, azurite-malachite

Bronze Sea

The above image appears in Martin Luther’s (1483-1546) Biblia das ist, die gantze heylige Schrifft and is courtesy of Pitt’s Theological library.

It seems that almost every mention of the number twelve was connected during history to the zodiac signs (including, so it seems, Scorpio).

1 Kings 7:23 tells about the molten sea made by King Solomon and in verse 7:25 we find:

It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea was set above upon them, and all their hinder parts were inward.

Morris Jastrow Jr., Ira Maurice Price, Marcus Jastrow and Louis Ginzberg in their entry Brazen Sea which was published in the Jewish Encyclopedia wrote that Midrash Tadshe says that the twelve oxen on which the sea rested represented the zodiac ("mazzalot"). As you may know the zodiac is divided to four groups according to the elements: earth, water fire and air.

Solomon’s temple functioned from the 10th century B.C.E until the 6th century B.C.E.

Labor of the Month

Correlation between months and the signs of the zodiac was a popular theme in medieval art. Here we see Scorpio appearing on a detail from 1556 Kalender of Shepherdes characterizing the months through the typical works that were made during each one of them.

Picture is copied from Wikipedia entry: Image:The Wheel of the Occupations of the Months and the Zodiac.JPG uploaded by Peacay.

See the whole Kalender of Shepherdes on Flickr

January: feasting, giving new years' gifts

February: warming by the fire, cutting wood, taking cattle to the market

March: sowing and ploughing, trimming the vines

April: celebrating spring

May: courting and hunting

June harvesting

July: harvesting

August: gathering fruits from trees

September: harvesting grapes

October: sowing, storing wine (Scorpio)

November preparing for winter

December: killing the pig

According to Jewish tradition (Midrash Tanchumah, Ha'azinu chapter 1) man’s life passes through 12 stages like the sun’s passing through the 12 zodiacal signs:

Birth- Aries

Power- Taurus

Illusion: Gemini

Desire: Cancer

Desire grows: Leo

False innocence- Virgo

Judgment- Libra

Punishment: Scorpio

Repentance- Sagitarius

Purification-1: Capricorn

Purification-2: Aquarius

Completion: Pisces

Manilius

Excerpt From a Poem by Manilius
(first century B.C.)
Translated by Thomas Creech and published in 1670

From:

http://www.cyberwitch.com/wychwood/Observatory/manilius.htm

First Aries, glorious in his Golden Wool,

Looks back and wonders at the mighty Bull,

Whose back-parts first appear: He bending lies

With Threat'ning Head, and calls the Twins to rise,

They clasp for fear , and mutually embrace;

And next (to) the Twins with an unsteady pace

Bright Cancer rolls: then Leo shakes his mane:

And following Virgo calms his rage again:

Then Day and Night weigh'd in Libra's Scales,

Equal awhile, at last the Night prevails,

And longer grown the heavier scale inclines

And draws bright Scorpio from the Winter signs:

Him Centaur follows with an aiming Eye

His Bow full drawn and ready to let fly:

Next narrow Horns the twisted Caper shows,

And from Aquarius' Urn a Flood o'erflows.

Near their loved Waves cold Pisces take their seat,

With Aries join and make the round complete.

Cheerful Image

Scorpio-sign art Picture is courtesy of Deaf RED Bear from Flickr. This is certainly the most cheerful image on this collection.

It seems fit to add here a children's song:

The Ram, the Bull, the heavenly Twins,

And next the Crab, the Lion shines.

The Virgin and the Scales;

The Scorpion, Archer, and Sea goat,

The man that holds the water pot,

And Fish with glitt'ring tails

The Praetorian Guard

On the Gemma Augustea cameo (10x23 cm; 10 C.E.) The Scorpio of Tiberius is engraved on a shield which is exhibited at the Vienna Kunsthistorishes Museum.

Scorpio was the emblem of the Praetorian of bodyguards.
It was used to honor the Emperor Tiberius for building the Praetorian Camp in Rome. His birth sign was Scorpio.

From: http://www.redrampant.com/roma/vexillum.html

In 31 BCE Augustus founded The Praetorian Guard in order to prevent incidences like the murdering of Julius Caesar. Scorpio appears on many Praetorian items. The Praetorian Guard existed until 312 CE.

P.S.

Andrew From www.redrampant.com sent me this coin with the following explanation:
A Roman coin issued by the emperor, Galba. You can see a picture of the emperor addressing his praetorians. In the middle there is a shield with the Scorpio.
Besides, Tiberius built the city of Tiberias, which is called after him, and which has a Synagogue with a Zodiac (probably to honor Tiberius). Now, Tiberius is called after the Tiber river in Rome. I can imagine him watching the Sea of Galilee from his porch, feeling at home (as if he's watching the Tiber).

Joseph Jacobs and Judah David Eisenstein wrote the Jewish Encyclopedia entry "Zodiac", where they claim that Jews adopted  Babylonian names of the constellations

Zodiac signs: Hebrew Names and Meanings

Aries- the word for ram in Hebrew is Ayil but the sign is called Tale, which means lamb.

Taurus – Shor, bull

Gemini- Teomim, twins (root: fitting(

Cancer- Sartan, Cancer

Leo- Aryeh, lion

Virgo – Betulah, virgin

Scorpio- Akrav, Scorpion

Libra- Moznayim, scales

Sagittarius- Keshet, bow

Capricorn – Gdi, young goat

Aquarius – Dli, bucket

Pisces – Dagim, fishes

Joseph Jacobs and Judah David Eisenstein quote Rabbis who tried to explain the origin of these names.

Aries is a reminder of the 'Aḳedah, Isaac representing the sacrificial lamb.

Taurus  is a reminder of the calf which Abraham provided for the angels.

Gemini represents Esau and Jacob, the twins.

Cancer represents Moses, who was saved from water.

Leo represents the Temple named "Ariel",  "the lion of God".

They bring other sources where Rabbis explain that:

Virgo is a symbol of marriage.

Libra weighs all the deeds of man.

Scorpio is punishment and  a symbol of hell.

Sagittarius represents salvation.

Aquarius represents purification.

Mithraism was one of the Roman religions in the 1st to the 4th centuries C.E. This sculpture is displayed at the British Museum of London. To me it looks so poetic!

The Last Supper and The Apostles

Michael Ladwein wrote in his book Leonardo Da Vinci, the Last Supper, 2006 ISBN 1902636759 that there were many interpretations relating the 12 apostles to the 12 signs of the zodiac, each author arranged them according to his own whim, like:

1.      Bartholomew corresponds Aries

2.      James the elder to Taurus

3.      Andrew to Gemini

4.      Judas to Cancer

5.      Peter to Leo

6.      John the Evangelist to Virgo

7.      Thomas to Libra

8.      James the younger to Scorpio

9.      Philip to Sagittarius

10.  Matthew to Capricorn

11.  Thaddeus to Aquarius)

12.  Simon to Pisces

Michael Ladwein wrote also that

1.      The second-century Gnostic Theodotus was the first to suggest such a relationship.

2.      A lamp found in Geneva dating to Early Christianity has the 12 apostles around a flame (the Sun, Jesus).

3.      In medieval art and literature this association is frequent.

Picture was taken from Wikipedia (entry: Last Supper), and was uploaded by “Liberal Freemason”.
